Program Fills Early Mental Health Needs Among Students

Community-based research has developed into a community-based solution in the RALLY program (Response Advocacy for Life and Learning in Youth), which brings community and mental health resources into the public schools through a new professional role, the "prevention practitioner." In order to address the mental health needs of students through steps like early detection and non-stigmatizing intervention, this staff member develops strong relationships with students, teachers, and administrators and provides mentoring, academic guidance, referrals, and other support and resources.

This in-school and after-school program grew from a longitudinal study at McLean Hospital to determine resiliency factors for high-risk kids. RALLY now operates out of McLean in collaboration with HMS, Massachusetts General Hospital, the Harvard Graduate School of Education, local public schools, and many community organizations.

Faculty members in psychology and psychiatry at HMS serve as supervisors and trainers for the team of practitioners who work with more than 1,000 students. Psychiatry fellows have the opportunity to learn methods for school consultations and to work with community organizations.

"We do not always have to create new programs; we certainly need to link old ones in creative new ways," said RALLY director Gil Noam, HMS associate professor of psychology at McLean. "RALLY does that by networking with parents, schools, and community organizations to bring services closer to the kids."

Funded by a consortium of private and public organizations, RALLY seeks to expand to new sites with more faculty involvement. It recently received a grant from Blue Cross/Blue Shield that will be used to expand to the Mary E. Curley Middle School in Jamaica Plain and a grant from Tufts Health Plan to extend a training and demonstration program at Grover Cleveland Middle School.
